Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome in Plain English

An insufficient secretion of the oily part of the tear film from the Meibomian glands. This can cause tears to evaporate more rapidly than normal. This inadequate secretion may be due to the blockage along the edge of the eyelid due to an inflammation, and some other skin disorders.

Dry Eye Syndrome can also result from the inability of the lacrimal glands to secrete adequate fluid to lubricate the eye and get it moisturized.

Some Factors That Can Increase Your Risk of Dry Eyes Syndrome:

  1. Some medications like Antihistamines, Decongestants, Birth Control Pills, some sleeping pills, drugs for high blood pressure
  2. Certain medical conditions like Thyroid deficiency, diabetes, vitamin A deficiency, lupus can also cause the Dr Eye Syndrome
  3. Climatic factors like sun, wind, dry air and dry climate
  4. When you blink less often, typically happens due to increased visual concentration, like when using the computer, reading or while driving
  5. Diseases like HIV, Bell’s Palsy and Shingles may also lead to Dry Eye
  6. Aging Allergy and Laser Eye Surgery

Some Symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome

A person with Dry Eye Syndrome may have a range of symptoms. These include:

  1. Redness of the eyes
  2. A burning sensation and a literal feeling of dryness and soreness in the eyes
  3. Discomfort and difficulties when wearing contact lenses
  4. Sensitivity to light
  5. Blurred vision.
  6. A sand-like feeling in the eyes
  7. Eye Fatigue after reading
  8. Watery eyes
  9. Difficulty with night driving
  10. Itchy eyes
